Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Greenlights Major Reforms for Pakistan’s Power Sector

Islamabad, In a significant move to overhaul Pakistan’s electricity transmission and distribution framework, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved fundamental reforms and reconstruction plans for the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the approval came during the final phase of a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sharif, which focused on evaluating ongoing reforms in the power sector. To ensure these reforms are effectively implemented, the Prime Minister has established a dedicated committee to finalize recommendations and oversee the restructuring process.

Additionally, a special cell will be set up within the Prime Minister’s Office to closely monitor the progress of these reforms. Prime Minister Sharif also revisited the initiative from his previous tenure to replace high-loss fans with energy-efficient models, requesting a detailed report on the conversion progress.

In his commitment to reduce the operational costs for industries and bolster economic growth, the Prime Minister instructed the formulation of a strategy to provide energy-efficient fans to low-income consumers and to ensure that industries receive electricity at reduced rates.

The meeting also addressed significant issues facing the electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), including their operational losses and the potential outsourcing of services. Discussions extended to tariff rationalization, with a focus on promoting electricity over gas for cooking among other domestic uses.

The assembly of federal ministers, high-ranking officials, and industry regulators at the meeting underscored the comprehensive nature of the planned reforms. These changes aim to enhance the efficiency of Pakistan’s power sector and support the government’s broader goals of industrial growth and increased revenue through improved energy management.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed satisfaction with the proceedings and emphasized the importance of timely execution of the approved reforms to achieve the desired improvements in the sector.
