New York: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the United Nations’ principles and multilateralism, emphasizing the organization’s pivotal role in fostering global peace and development.

According to Radio Pakistan, Sharif made these remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. During the discussion, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Guterres’ leadership and his efforts to uphold the UN Charter for the betterment of humanity.

The two leaders discussed a range of regional and international issues, including the Middle East situation. Sharif emphasized dialogue and diplomacy’s importance in resolving regional tensions and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to promoting regional peace and stability. The Prime Minister also expressed support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.

Additionally, Sharif highlighted the increasing trend of Islamophobia, particularly in Pakistan’s vicinity, and called for effective international measures to address the issue. The conversation also touched on the situation in Afghanistan and the rise in terrorism originating from the country.

Guterres commended Pakistan’s active role and strong presence at the UN, acknowledging its contributions to international peace and security. He also praised Pakistan’s mediation efforts and sacrifices in countering terrorism, underscoring the country’s efforts for a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region.
