Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has expressed approval of the World Bank’s commitment to providing $20 billion over the next decade, highlighting its potential to support inclusive and sustainable development across Pakistan.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister, while presiding over a cabinet meeting in Islamabad, emphasized the importance of the newly constructed Gwadar International Airport. Built with a $230 million grant from China, the airport is expected to enhance not only the economy of Balochistan but also that of the entire nation. The Prime Minister described it as a valuable gift from China and welcomed the initiation of flight operations.
He also addressed security concerns in Balochistan, labeling those responsible for violence as adversaries of both the province and the nation. Sharif underscored the significance of ensuring the operationalization of the Gwadar Port, describing any obstruction as detrimental to national interests.
On the economic front, Sharif noted a notable increase in IT exports, which reached $348 million in December of the previous year. The government, he stated, is committed to further fostering growth in this sector and is taking steps to promote electric vehicles within the country.
In addition to the World Bank’s pledge, the Prime Minister remarked on the positive trends in various economic indicators, attributing this to the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy. He also mentioned the government’s endeavors to improve facilities for Pakistani pilgrims during Hajj.
Lastly, Sharif paid tribute to the armed forces and citizens for their sacrifices in combating threats to the nation’s security, specifically referring to the elimination of extremist elements.
