Islamabad: Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator of the Prime Minister for Climate Change, has emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation between government entities and industry stakeholders to meet Pakistan’s climate and sustainability goals. Alam highlighted the importance of reducing emissions to maintain agricultural and economic stability in the country.
According to a statement by Press Information Department, during a meeting with a delegation from the edible oil industry led by Seatrade Group CEO Omar Najib Balagamwala, Alam stressed the necessity of sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency, waste management, and the adoption of circular economy practices. She noted that while the edible oil industry is vital to the national economy, it must also minimize its environmental impact to align with government climate objectives.
Alam assured the industry of the government’s support in addressing challenges such as shipment issues and technical barriers in importing oilseeds. She urged industry leaders to explore sustainable production alternatives and underscored the importance of responsible raw material sourcing and cleaner production techniques.
The meeting also included Parliamentary Secretary Rana Ahmad Atiq Anwar, Federal Secretary Aisha Humera Moriani, and other senior officials. Anwar highlighted the need to enhance the edible oil industry’s economic and sustainable growth, emphasizing government efforts to boost local production and reduce import dependence.
Aisha Humera Moriani reinforced the government’s commitment to the sector, pointing out its potential economic contributions while addressing environmental challenges. She advocated for capacity building as a crucial step towards improving productivity and sustainability in the industry.
