Karachi: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has instructed the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) Board to devise a detailed strategy aimed at creating a sustainable business model that prioritizes public service and financial viability. In a meeting held in Karachi with the SSGCL Board and senior management, the Minister emphasized the need for improved governance and operational efficiency to address the company’s challenges.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting reviewed SSGCL’s performance, noting a significant reduction in Unaccounted for Gas (UFG) by approximately 57 percent. The management reported no gas load shedding for K-Electric, industrial consumers, and fertilizer plants, with domestic consumers receiving gas three times daily. Minister Malik highlighted that gas prices have remained stable over the past year, with substantial progress in curbing the increase in gas circular debt.

The Minister proposed revising the current gas subsidy system and transitioning to a unified gas price, while protecting vulnerable segments through targeted social programs. He stressed the importance of a self-sustaining business reform strategy to enhance operational efficiency, HR capabilities, and revenue recovery.

During the meeting, the Secretary Petroleum reiterated the independence of the SSGCL Board under the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Act and urged it to take necessary actions for the company’s long-term sustainability. The Minister also mentioned ongoing collaboration with the World Bank on comprehensive gas sector reforms.

Addressing issues in Balochistan, the Minister directed the SSGCL Board to prioritize resolving gas supply challenges and infrastructure constraints. He affirmed the government’s commitment to improving gas availability and service delivery in the province while maintaining public service as the primary focus of the company’s strategic decisions.
