Islamabad: Pakistan is poised to take over the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for a one-year term following the conclusion of the SCO Council of Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif will attend the summit and engage in bilateral discussions with Kyrgyz leadership.

According to Radio Pakistan, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi highlighted that the upcoming SCO Summit in Islamabad next year will be a significant event during Pakistan’s chairmanship. Andrabi addressed several regional concerns, including Pakistan’s openness to dialogue with Afghanistan, contingent on actionable measures against hostile proxies.

Regarding trade with Iran, Andrabi affirmed Pakistan’s adherence to bilateral agreements and international law, notwithstanding unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran. He noted the robust trade relationship between Pakistan and Iran and expressed a desire for expansion.

Additionally, Andrabi discussed Pakistan’s diplomatic involvement in Middle East conflicts and the US-Iran standoff, emphasizing the visit of military leaders to Iran as part of Pakistan’s mediating efforts.

In response to claims by a former Indian military official, Andrabi rejected assertions concerning incidents at Kirana Hills, emphasizing Pakistan’s defensive capabilities and historical accuracy based on operational facts.
