Bishkek: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to resolving regional disputes through peaceful means, emphasizing adherence to international law and UN guidelines, during his address at the SCO Council of Heads of State meeting in Kyrgyzstan. He highlighted Pakistan’s role in advocating for peace and mediating during a recent regional crisis that disrupted global energy supplies, urging continued multilateral efforts for peace and stability.

According to Radio Pakistan, Sharif discussed the economic impact of the crisis, noting that Pakistan and the international community have faced significant costs. He emphasized Pakistan’s dedication to peacebuilding, citing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a pivotal step toward regional de-escalation. Sharif expressed gratitude to supportive nations and underscored the importance of multilateralism and cooperation among SCO member states.

The Prime Minister also addressed the challenges facing South Asia, advocating for the unconditional honoring of water treaties and self-determination for oppressed nations, including Palestine. Highlighting Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, he stressed the need for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan to achieve lasting regional peace.

As Pakistan assumes the chairmanship of the SCO, Sharif proposed an action plan prioritizing sectors like IT, energy, and poverty reduction, under the theme of “Turning Vision into Action, Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity.” The summit concluded with the signing of a joint declaration by participating leaders.
