Islamabad: Pakistan marked the fifth death anniversary of Syed Ali Shah Gillani, a prominent figure in the struggle for Kashmir’s self-determination, by paying tribute to his enduring influence and leadership. Gillani, a founding leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, was remembered for his dedication to the Kashmir cause and his deep connection to Pakistan.

According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Gillani’s commitment to securing the political rights of the people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Despite facing significant challenges and state repression, Gillani’s leadership kept the Kashmiri struggle for freedom alive on the international stage. His famous declaration, “We are Pakistanis; Pakistan belongs to us,” highlighted the strong spiritual and emotional ties between Pakistan and Kashmir.

Gillani’s lifelong efforts have left a lasting legacy inspiring future generations to remain aware of their identity and rights. Pakistan continues to support the Kashmiri people’s pursuit of self-determination, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for their rights on global platforms. The government reiterated its stance that peace in South Asia hinges on resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and Kashmiri aspirations.
