Pakistan Braces for Intense Heatwaves and Water Stress This Summer

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a report warning of severe heatwaves and below-normal rainfall across Pakistan this summer, raising concerns over potential water stress and agricultural impacts.

According to the NDMA’s forecast, temperatures are expected to soar, particularly in Southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, where they could reach up to 45°C. The agency has cautioned that these extreme conditions may exacerbate the risk of wildfires, especially in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Potohar, Murree, and Balochistan.

The report also highlights the potential for rapid snowmelt in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, posing a risk of glacial lake outburst floods. These events could have significant implications for local communities and infrastructure.

The anticipated heat and lack of rainfall are also expected to impact crop production across the country, threatening food security and livelihoods. Farmers in affected regions may face challenges due to reduced water availability and increased temperatures.

The NDMA’s findings underscore the urgent need for preparedness and mitigation strategies to address the anticipated climate challenges. Authorities and communities are urged to take proactive measures to minimize the impacts of the forecasted conditions.
