Islamabad: Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema recently met with Dr. Tanaka Akihiko, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to discuss expanding bilateral development cooperation and enhancing support for Pakistan’s key sectors.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting highlighted Japan’s longstanding partnership with Pakistan, which has included approximately US$11.7 billion in Official Development Assistance over seven decades. This assistance has contributed to Pakistan’s socio-economic development, particularly in sectors such as energy, transport, industry, agriculture, and education.

The discussions included a proposal for JICA to co-finance the Main Line-1 (ML-1) Railway Project, which is also supported by the Asian Development Bank. This modernization effort aims to improve Pakistan’s transport network and boost economic growth. Dr. Tanaka acknowledged the project’s importance and noted that JICA would consider the proposal.

Additionally, the need for skilled workforce development and digital infrastructure upgrades in rural areas was emphasized. JICA expressed support for initiatives to enhance human capital and digital connectivity, which are critical for economic development. The agency also committed to assisting with feasibility studies for major projects and exploring cooperation in Pakistan’s tourism sector, particularly in preserving Gandhara art and civilization sites.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening development cooperation, focusing on infrastructure, human resources, digital transformation, and tourism to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Pakistan.
