Muslim Prisoner Re-Arrested in Tamil Nadu Under UAPA Shortly After Receiving Bail

Karachi, A Muslim prisoner, recently granted bail by the Madras High Court, was re-arrested in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The arrest occurred within 72 hours of his release, marking a quick turnaround in his legal situation.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the prisoner, identified as Mustaheen of Manickampalayam in Erode district, was initially arrested on charges of conspiring to kill members of Hindu organisations. Despite receiving bail from the Madras High Court on December 12, Mustaheen remained in Coimbatore central prison due to pending paperwork. However, he was re-arrested by the Race Course police under the same act on new allegations.

The new charges brought against Mustaheen accuse him of resisting jail officials’ attempts to enter his cell and inspect his belongings. His re-arrest raises questions about the legal processes and the use of the UAPA in this case. Mustaheen had been held in the high-security block of the Coimbatore prison since July 27, 2022.

The decision to grant bail was made by a division bench of Justices S.S. Sundar and Sunder Mohan of the Madras High Court, which has now been overshadowed by the recent turn of events.
