Minister of Energy Highlights 40 Years of Pakistan-Korea Collaborations

Islamabad, In a commemorative event celebrating the “40 Years of Friendship-Past, Present and Future between Republic of Korea and Pakistan,” Minister of Energy, Mr. Muhammad Ali, underlined the milestones and prospective visions for collaboration between the two nations. Held at the Marriot Hotel in Islamabad, the event aimed to appreciate the enduring partnership between the Republic of Korea and Pakistan, particularly emphasizing the shared endeavors in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

According to a news release by the Press International Department, following an address by the Korean Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Suh Sangpyo, and an introductory note, Minister Ali took to the podium to shed light on the fruitful diplomatic journey since its initiation on November 7, 1983. The Minister lauded multiple projects in the energy domain, notably mentioning the anticipated commissioning in 2028 of the 215 MW Asrit-Kedam Hydropower Project on the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), spearheaded by the Korea South-East Power. He also accentuated the establishment of Mira Power Limited, overseeing the Gulpur Hydropower Plant, and acknowledged the Kot Addu Power Company Ltd. operating at 1600MW as testament to their cooperative efforts.

Highlighting Pakistan’s vast potential in energy, the Minister shared insights on forthcoming reforms, including digital metering and a substantial overhaul of the transmission sector, aimed to entice significant future investments. With an emphasis on renewable energy, he pointed towards the untapped potential in Solar and Wind energy.

Minister Ali also acknowledged the socio-cultural connections between the countries, noting the significant Pakistani community in South Korea and vice versa. He cited the collaboration in infrastructure, referencing the 2019 framework agreement where South Korea committed $500 million in Economic Development Cooperation Fund loans for Pakistan’s infrastructure. Recognizing the vital educational ties, the Minister lauded the 2022 MoU between Duksung Women University in Seoul and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

Concluding his address, the Minister articulated his optimism for the continued partnership in areas of sustainable energy, research, innovation, and human resource development, asserting that the past 40 years mark only the beginning of the boundless opportunities ahead.
