Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has underscored the critical importance of blue carbon ecosystems in fostering a climate-resilient and sustainable maritime sector in Pakistan. He emphasized the need to conserve and restore marine habitats such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, which serve as carbon sinks and natural defenses against environmental challenges.
Chaudhry highlighted that these ecosystems play a significant role in climate mitigation by efficiently capturing carbon and protecting coastlines, while also supporting marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. He expressed concern over various threats to these ecosystems, including unregulated development, pollution, overfishing, and climate change, which compromise their ability to store carbon and support marine life.
The minister pointed to the Indus Delta as a key region for mangrove forests that stabilize coastlines and support fisheries. Restoration projects in Sindh and Balochistan are underway to rehabilitate these ecosystems and generate job opportunities for local communities. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in ensuring conservation and economic development.
Chaudhry cited the mangrove restoration initiative in Keti Bandar as a successful example of environmental protection improving local livelihoods through reduced erosion and enhanced fish stocks. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a sustainable blue economy, integrating ecological responsibility with economic growth.
The Delta Blue Carbon project was highlighted for its contributions to carbon credit financing, generating significant revenue and creating thousands of jobs. It has improved infrastructure, providing clean water access to many residents. Pakistan is engaging in global partnerships to expand its blue carbon efforts, utilizing tools like Green and Blue Bonds and aligning with international platforms such as the World Bank’s PROBLUE trust fund.
The minister called for collaborative action and integration of green technologies in maritime sectors to align with global climate objectives, ensuring long-term sustainability. He stressed that safeguarding marine ecosystems today is crucial for securing a sustainable future for Pakistan’s maritime economy.
