Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab Stresses Resilience and Recovery in Flood-Affected Areas

Karachi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized the resilience and determination of the Pakistani nation in restoring areas affected by recent floods and rains. Speaking at a seminar on resilient and gender-inclusive sustainable housing in Sindh, he expressed confidence that this spirit of resilience would lead to economic prosperity and stability for future generations. The seminar, focusing on the challenges and strategies for housing in flood-affected areas, was organized under the auspices of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Sindh People’s Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF).

According to Media KMC, Karachi has historically faced and overcome various difficulties and trials, including the recent catastrophic floods. Wahab expressed gratitude towards the People’s Party government and non-governmental organizations for their efforts in data collection and ensuring that allocated funds were used solely for reconstruction and rehabilitation. He also noted the ongoing cultivation efforts that have helped bring the situation under control.

The seminar featured discussions by key figures including Federal Secretary National Commission for Women Status Khawaja Imran Raza and UNOPS Country Manager Brian Fawcett. Raza underscored the importance of providing stable, sustainable, and gender-friendly housing in flood-affected areas, while Fawcett highlighted UNOPS Pakistan’s commitment to gender equality in housing projects. Fawcett also emphasized the need for private sector financing and stakeholder inclusion in the rehabilitation process.

The event reflected the collaborative efforts of government, international agencies, and the private sector in addressing the aftermath of the floods in Sindh, focusing on sustainable solutions and the broader goal of achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Pakistan.
