LEH, The Leh apex body has voiced significant concerns regarding the new Ladakh Industrial Land Allotment policy, arguing that it goes against the interests of local communities and poses risks to the environment.
According to Kashmir Media Service, leaders of the apex body, in a press conference, articulated their apprehensions about the new policy. They emphasized that it is crucial for their concerns to be addressed to achieve sustainable and equitable development in Ladakh, while also preserving its delicate ecosystem and safeguarding the rights of its tribal communities.
The leaders expressed that the new industrial policy appears to undermine the authority of the Autonomous Hill Development Councils (AHDCs) and seems geared towards enabling the entry of large-scale industries into Ladakh, which runs counter to the desires of the local populace.
Despite widespread objections, the implementation of the policy is proceeding. The leaders suggested that the AHDCs of Leh and Kargil may have to consider legal actions to maintain their autonomy, protect their council’s rights, and safeguard the interests of their communities.
They criticized the policy for not incorporating input from local stakeholders and for sidelining public representatives in its formulation. The leaders argued that the policy is primarily designed to facilitate land acquisition in Ladakh, which they view as detrimental to the region’s people.
