Karachi: Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, met with representatives of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) at their South Zone office in Karachi to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the leather industry, a significant contributor to Pakistan’s economy.
According to Ministry of Planning Development and Special Initiatives, the meeting was attended by key figures from the PTA, including Mr. Hamid Zahur, Chairman PTA Central, and other senior members. The discussion focused on enhancing export potential, infrastructure development, and sustainable practices within the leather sector. The stakeholders emphasized the need for policies that encourage export growth and highlighted the industry’s potential to compete globally if adequately supported.
The minister acknowledged procedural bottlenecks and high business costs, assuring stakeholders of the government’s commitment to reducing barriers and introducing reforms. Infrastructure upgrades, such as improved roads and water supply in industrial zones, were also identified as urgent needs to boost productivity and competitiveness.
Environmental sustainability and law and order were also topics of concern. The minister promised to balance industrial growth with environmental conservation and to coordinate with authorities to ensure a secure business environment. He expressed appreciation for the PTA’s role and reiterated the government’s support for maximizing the industry’s potential.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing communication and collaboration to address the industry’s challenges, with the PTA expressing gratitude for the minister’s engagement and proactive approach.
