Islamabad: Kashmiris worldwide are commemorating the 76th anniversary of a pivotal United Nations resolution that advocates for their right to self-determination. The UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution, originally adopted on January 5, 1949, calls for a free and impartial plebiscite to decide the fate of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Press Information Department, the resolution underscores the right to self-determination as enshrined in international law and recognized by human rights instruments. However, concerns persist over India’s actions in the region known as Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Since August 2019, India has been accused of measures aimed at changing the demographic and political landscape of IIOJK, drawing criticism for alleged human rights violations.
The United Nations General Assembly continues to pass resolutions highlighting the self-determination rights of those under occupation. The international community, particularly the United Nations, is urged to uphold the promises of the original resolution and support the people of IIOJK. Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people in their pursuit of self-determination, as emphasized in the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
