Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has issued a directive for all organizations under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to conduct immediate fire safety audits of their facilities, following a recent incident at PIMS Hospital.

According to Press Information Department, the directive encompasses a wide range of facilities, including offices, hospitals, residential buildings, workshops, warehouses, oil piers, and other establishments. The Karachi Port Trust Hospital has been given particular priority. The audits will evaluate the availability and condition of firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers, alarms, smoke detectors, hydrants, and sprinklers. Electrical wiring, distribution systems, generators, and other potential fire hazards will also be scrutinized.

Organizations are required to ensure that emergency exits, escape routes, and fire exits are clearly marked and unobstructed. The audits will also cover emergency lighting, safety signage, evacuation plans, response strategies, assembly points, and staff responsibilities. Regular inspection, testing, servicing, and timely replacement of firefighting equipment are mandated, along with fire safety drills and staff training.

The audits aim to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and building regulations. Any deficiencies identified must be rectified immediately, especially those that pose risks to life or property. The ministry permits the engagement of qualified fire safety professionals and relevant authorities for inspections and certifications as needed. Heads of organizations are instructed to submit detailed audit reports to the ministry within 15 days, outlining deficiencies, corrective measures, and timelines for resolution.

Organizational heads are tasked with personally supervising the implementation of these directives to ensure that all fire safety hazards are promptly addressed.
