Islamabad, In a significant stride towards fostering development and recovery, a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), led by Dr. Walid Abdelwahab, Director of the IsDB Regional Hub in Türkiye, has engaged with Pakistani officials to reinforce partnerships and initiate critical projects. This collaboration aligns with the shared goal of sustainable and inclusive growth, highlighting the enduring relationship between IsDB and Pakistan.
According to Press Information Department, during the delegation’s visit from March 22 to 24, 2024, key discussions and agreements were made, reflecting a deep commitment to Pakistan’s development agenda. Notably, Mr. Ahad Khan Cheema, Pakistan’s Minister for Economic Affairs, highlighted the strong partnership between Pakistan and IsDB, referencing the recent civilian award to the IsDB President, which symbolizes international solidarity with Pakistan, especially in response to the 2022 flood crisis.
A landmark achievement of this visit was the signing of a $200 million financing agreement for the Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project. This substantial investment aims to construct 700,000 houses for around 4.2 million people, along with the creation of 75,000 water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, directly benefiting over 1.3 million individuals. Such initiatives not only address immediate needs but also contribute to long-term resilience and development.
Furthermore, the IsDB and Pakistani officials exchanged the Country Engagement Framework (CEF) Document for 2023-2025, setting forth strategic directions and priorities that resonate with Pakistan’s recovery and growth objectives. This framework underscores three critical areas: enhancing recovery efforts, combating poverty while building resilience, and fostering green economic growth.
Dr. Abdelwahab reassured Pakistan of IsDB’s continued support, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to assisting Pakistan in its development journey, particularly in establishing climate-resilient infrastructure. The Minister for Economic Affairs, Mr. Cheema, expressed gratitude for IsDB’s unwavering support, affirming the intention to strengthen this fruitful relationship further.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step toward realizing Pakistan’s development ambitions, showcasing the power of international partnerships in addressing critical challenges and fostering sustainable growth.
