ISLAMABAD: Heatwave conditions are anticipated to develop in southern Pakistan in the coming days, with temperatures expected to exceed the typical range for this time of year. According to National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, El-Niño conditions are projected to emerge with a 61% probability between May and July. Current observations indicate that May and June are the hottest months, particularly affecting south Punjab, upper Sindh, and southern/eastern Balochistan, where temperatures can soar up to 52°C during heatwaves.
Temperatures in these regions are currently 2 to 4°C above the normal range of 43 to 45°C for May and June. A mild heatwave is likely to occur from April 29 to May 3 in the southern parts of the country. Meanwhile, the upper regions may experience a westerly wave from the night of April 27 to April 29 and again from May 3 to May 5, which could result in a temperature drop of 2 to 4°C.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates if a heatwave is likely to develop.
