Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired a committee meeting focused on the commercialization of genetically modified (GM) corn in Pakistan, reaching a consensus on a strategic framework. The committee, initiated by the Prime Minister, aimed to conduct an objective review of Pakistan’s policy regarding GM maize.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting involved consultations with various stakeholders and discussed frameworks for implementing and transitioning to GM corn commercialization. The committee highlighted the importance of a balanced approach that addresses stakeholder concerns while aligning with national interests.

Discussions centered around the coexistence of GM and non-GM maize, in accordance with the National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy, considering ways to ensure smooth operation of both segments. Concerns over the transition timeline, non-GM seed availability, and price stability were addressed, with an emphasis on gradual adaptation to the new framework.

Industry concerns about the transition period and non-GM seed supply were noted, with a focus on maintaining availability to prevent price hikes. The committee stressed the need for a comprehensive implementation framework with safeguards and guidelines to ensure effective coexistence, incorporating input from stakeholders such as the seed industry, maize millers, and experts.

The Finance Minister emphasized that the focus should be on effective implementation and transition, with realistic timelines and minimal delays. The adoption of technology and modern agricultural practices was also discussed to enhance productivity in Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

Senator Aurangzeb acknowledged the progress made towards consensus and emphasized that recommendations should prioritize national interests while addressing stakeholder concerns. The committee agreed to finalize the transition framework promptly for implementation by relevant authorities.

The meeting included representatives from the public and private sectors, including the Ministry of National Food Security & Research, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Agriculture and Food Security, Pakistan Green Initiative, business and export sectors, and technical experts.
