ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has emphasized the critical role of democratic values and robust institutions in steering Pakistan toward sustainable development. Speaking on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, he underscored the necessity of a strong democratic system for ensuring a prosperous and stable future for the nation.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq highlighted democracy as a system that ensures people’s participation in governance, grounded in principles of freedom, equality, and collective decision-making. He stressed that democracy’s strength lies in respecting the public mandate, maintaining transparency, and upholding accountability and the rule of law. Paying homage to those who have struggled for democratic governance, he acknowledged the historical efforts toward achieving constitutional supremacy and popular representation in Pakistan.

The Speaker described Parliament as the cornerstone of the democratic system, representing the people’s aspirations and entrusting elected officials with the duty to legislate in the public interest. He noted that while differences of opinion are intrinsic to democracy, they must be addressed through dialogue and consultation rather than confrontation.

Sadiq also pointed out that elections alone do not suffice for an effective democratic system. Continuous public participation and respect for diverse societal views are essential. He emphasized the importance of involving women, youth, minorities, and other segments in political processes to enhance democratic representation.

Highlighting Parliament’s role as a bridge between the populace and state institutions, the Speaker mentioned the National Assembly’s active contribution to addressing public concerns via legislation and oversight. He noted the significance of parliamentary committees and forums in fostering consensus on national issues.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also acknowledged the youth as pivotal to Pakistan’s future, advocating for their engagement with parliamentary and democratic practices. He called for providing youth with opportunities to partake in national decision-making processes.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah echoed similar sentiments, asserting that democracy safeguards the right of self-governance and political freedom. He commemorated the contributions of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan’s democratic journey and emphasized the need for continued efforts to promote democratic values and resolve political differences through dialogue.
