Delhi Ranks Second Among India’s Most Polluted Cities

New Delhi: Air quality in India’s capital Delhi has deteriorated, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 441, marking it as the second-most polluted city in India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Bahadurgarh in Haryana recorded the highest AQI of 445, followed by Delhi at 441. Other cities with high pollution levels include Bhiwani in Haryana with an AQI of 415 and Bikaner in Rajasthan at 404. An AQI above 400 is classified as “severe,” posing health risks to residents, especially those with pre-existing health conditions.

To combat the rising pollution levels, the GRAP Stage 3 restrictions have been implemented in the Delhi-NCR region. These restrictions include bans on construction and demolition activities. Vehicular emissions have been identified as contributing 15.8% to the pollution levels, while stubble burning accounted for 25% of Delhi’s pollution on the preceding Saturday.

The primary pollutant, PM2.5, is of particular concern due to its ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, posing significant health risks. The situation underscores the ongoing environmental challenges faced by the capital and the urgent need for effective measures to improve air quality in the region.
