Islamabad: The detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s family members and activists from his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been criticized as a serious violation of human rights. The detentions occur as PTI plans a substantial protest march on September 27, challenging the government’s stance on public protests.

According to Amnesty International, members of Khan’s family, including his three sisters, have been detained, and PTI activists have been arrested in anticipation of the planned protests. Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for South Asia, Babu Ram Pant, emphasized the detention as a breach of rights, including liberty and freedom of expression. These actions align with the government’s previously stated intent to prevent the protests, with roadblocks already appearing in Islamabad as a preemptive measure.

The PTI march, aimed at demanding the release and fair treatment of Khan, who has been in prison for three years, faces significant governmental opposition. Khan is currently serving sentences related to corruption and state gift cases. His sister Aleema Khan was detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, while other family members and PTI activists have also been arrested. Some detainees have been released after agreeing not to participate in the protests.

The Islamabad High Court has ruled against political parties occupying public spaces, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has declared that the government will prevent any march into the capital. The situation remains tense as PTI’s plans progress amidst increasing governmental restrictions.
