Islamabad: As the third anniversary of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s detention approaches, Amnesty International has raised concerns over his treatment and called for the restoration of his rights. The organization highlights issues such as prolonged solitary confinement, restricted access to legal counsel, and limited medical care for Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi Khan.

According to Amnesty International, Pakistan’s authorities have systematically denied Imran Khan the right to a fair trial and have prevented him from meeting his family for over eight months. His vision is reportedly deteriorating, and both he and his wife have been denied regular access to legal counsel since December 2025. The organization urges the Pakistani authorities to allow the couple to see their family and lawyers, provide adequate medical care, and end their unlawful solitary confinement.

Imran Khan, who was elected as Prime Minister in 2018 and ousted in April 2022, has been under detention since August 2023 following his arrest. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), faces severe restrictions, and key members have been detained under anti-terrorism charges. Amnesty International, along with the UN Special Rapporteur on torture and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, has raised concerns about the conditions of Khan’s detention, describing it as politically motivated and a violation of international human rights law.
