New Delhi, India witnessed a distressing increase in suicides among daily wage laborers and farmers in 2022, with an average of 114 laborers and 31 farmers and agricultural workers taking their own lives each day.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India released its annual report indicating a concerning rise in suicide rates. The report revealed that there were a total of 1.70 lakh (170,000) suicides in the country in 2022, marking a 4% increase from the 1.64 lakh (164,000) suicides reported in 2021.
The data showed that the highest numbers of suicides were recorded in several states, with Maharashtra leading at 37.6%, followed by Karnataka at 21.2%, Andhra Pradesh at 8.1%, Tamil Nadu at 6.4%, and Madhya Pradesh at 5.7%.
This trend highlights significant social and economic challenges within these communities, drawing attention to the need for urgent intervention and support systems to address the underlying causes of these high suicide rates among daily wage laborers and farmers across India.
