AJK Civil Society Remembers Zia Mustafa on First Martyrdom Anniversary

Islamabad, Members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) civil society have commemorated the life and unfortunate demise of Zia Mustafa. He was killed in custody by Indian troops in Poonch district exactly a year ago from today’s date.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, Zia Mustafa, hailing from Rawalakot in AJK, had been held in Kot Bhalwal jail, Jammu, starting from January 13, 2003. Two years prior to today, he was extracted from this jail by Indian troops, and subsequently lost his life in what has been described as a contrived encounter in Bhata Durrian, located in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district.

In reverence to Zia Mustafa on the anniversary of his martyrdom, civil society members have called for an official investigation led by a United Nations team into the circumstances of his death.

In an homage to his earlier life, it was recalled that during his educational years, Zia Mustafa was once recognized by the then-leader of AJK, Sardar Ibrahim Khan. The accolade was awarded in recognition of his commendable role in a school drama.
