World Observes International Mountain Day to Highlight Mountain Conservation

Islamabad, Today marks the observance of International Mountain Day, a global event celebrated in various countries, including Pakistan. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mountains and the need to improve the conditions of these natural wonders and the communities that inhabit their surroundings.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated December 11th as International Mountain Day in 2001. This decision was made to acknowledge the critical role mountains play in our world and to encourage efforts towards their preservation. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Restoring Mountain Ecosystems’, focusing on the ecological health and sustainability of mountain regions.

Pakistan, home to eight of the world’s sixteen highest mountain peaks, has a special connection to this day. The country boasts five towering peaks over 26,000 feet, including the world’s second-highest peak, K-2, and the ninth highest, Nanga Parbat. These majestic mountains are not only a source of national pride but also represent significant ecological and environmental value.

International Mountain Day serves as a reminder of the need to protect and restore mountain ecosystems. It highlights the importance of sustainable practices and conservation efforts to ensure the health of these vital natural resources and the well-being of the communities that depend on them.
