Islamabad, World AIDS Day 2023 was commemorated in Pakistan with a firm commitment to the global theme “Let Communities Lead.” This event, organized by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, in collaboration with various partners, emphasized Pakistan’s dedication to eradicating the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
According to Press Information Department, Dr. Nadeem Jan, Federal Minister for the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations & Coordination, asserted the government’s commitment to achieving the global 95-95-95 HIV milestones. He highlighted the importance of addressing healthcare and societal imbalances to ensure inclusivity and equity in the fight against AIDS. Mr. Iftikhar Ali Shallwani, Federal Secretary of the Ministry, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the critical role of communities living with, at risk of, or affected by HIV in leading the efforts to curb the epidemic.
Dr. Razia Kaniz Fatima, National Coordination for the Common Management Unit (CMU) for AIDS, TB, and Malaria, stressed the empowerment and trust of communities to lead programs addressing their unique needs. Mr. Julien Harneis, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Pakistan, pointed out the rising HIV infections in the country despite ongoing efforts, calling for improved support and understanding of marginalized groups.
Ms. Yuki Takemoto, Country Director of UNAIDS Pakistan, highlighted the potential of community leadership in ending AIDS as a public health threat in Pakistan. The event also featured a panel discussion with representatives from UN agencies, the Government, and donor organizations, including Dr. Razia Kaniz Fatima, Ms. Kate Somvongsiri, Mission Director of USAID, Dr. Samuel Rizk, Resident Representative of UNDP in Pakistan, Dr. Luay Shabaneh, Representative of UNFPA Pakistan, Dr. Youssef Filali-Meknassi, Director/Representative to Pakistan, Mr. Asghar Satti, National Coordinator APLHIIV, and Dr. Syed Kaleem Imam, a law enforcement specialist. The panel was facilitated by Ms. Takemoto.
The event concluded with participants visiting Community Informational Booths set up by communities and partners, showcasing educational and outreach materials. This exhibition served as an essential platform for key community members to engage and disseminate information on AIDS prevention and treatment.
This year’s World AIDS Day in Pakistan marks a significant stride in the nation’s commitment to combating HIV/AIDS through community-led initiatives, policy implementation, and inclusive healthcare services.
