UNESCO Opens Nominations for ICT in Education Prize Focused on Digital Learning and Climate Education

Paris, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the opening of nominations for the King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize, focusing on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education. This year’s theme centers on “Digital learning for greening education,” highlighting the role of digital learning in climate change education.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the 2023 edition of the prize will showcase projects that effectively and ethically use digital technologies to create inclusive and engaging learning experiences, particularly in the area of climate education. The initiative aims to demonstrate how digital learning can be tailored to the specific needs of climate education, considering the learners’ interests and local contexts.

The prize will recognize projects that successfully integrate public digital learning with green education, reflecting priorities set at the 2022 Transforming Education Summit. Two winners, chosen by UNESCO’s Director-General based on international jury recommendations, will each receive a reward of US$ 25,000, a diploma, and international recognition at an award ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters.

Eligible applicants include individuals, institutions, or non-governmental organizations with projects of at least one year’s duration in the field of digital learning for climate education. Nominations must be submitted by either a National Commission of a UNESCO Member State or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO, with self-nominations being ineligible.

Governments of UNESCO Member States and NGOs in partnership with UNESCO are invited to nominate up to three projects aligning with this year’s theme. Detailed information on the selection process and application guidelines is available on the UNESCO Prize webpage. The deadline for nominations is set for 5 February 2024, midnight Paris time.
