UN Committee to Review Women’s Rights Progress in Eight Countries During Geneva Session

Geneva, The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is set to review the progress on women’s rights and gender equality in eight countries: the Republic of Korea, Montenegro, Singapore, Estonia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Brazil, and Rwanda. This review, part of the committee’s regular assessments, will occur from 13 to 31 May at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, these countries are among the 189 States parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. They will undergo scrutiny by CEDAW’s 23 independent international experts to evaluate their compliance with the convention. The committee has prepared for this session by reviewing reports and submissions from national human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations, and other sources.

The reviews are scheduled for specific dates throughout May, with each country allocated time slots for morning and afternoon sessions. These meetings, which will be held in Rooms XXIII and XXVI of the E-Building, are open to the accredited press and will be broadcast live on UN Web TV. The session page offers additional details on the reports submitted by the States and the full schedule of the meetings, aiming to provide transparency and encourage public engagement in the process of eliminating discrimination against women.
