UK urged to raise voice for its citizen Jagtar Singh illegally detained in India

New Delhi, August 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):Jagtar Singh Johal is among many Sikh activists who were arrested in Punjab, India, for raising awareness about the genocide of Sikhs by India in 1984 and onward. In November 2017, Jagtar Singh Johal went on holiday from the UK to India to get married and two days after his wedding, he was shopping with his new wife when he was abducted by the Indian police in Punjab.

Over 1750 days have elapsed since he has been illegally detained and till date there has been no formal charges levelled against him. Members of Sikh community in India and abroad have launched a ‘Free Jagtar Singh Johal’ campaign on social media.

“He is being inhumanly tortured and abused daily. He has been subjected to third degree torture in prison by the police including harsh beating, stretching of his legs to the point he could not even stand up on his own, and electrocution of his ear lobes, nipples and genitals”.

He criticized the British government for keeping silence on abduction and illegal confinement of its citizens by the Modi government in India. He said, “Almost 1752 days later and UK government is still silent. Boris Johnson is aware of Jaggi’s position and has previously said they are ‘doing all they can but, how on EARTH is a British citizen being held in another country and being tortured without Immediate Action.”
