U.S. Monitors India’s Investigation into Alleged Assassination Plot on Sikh Leader

Washington, The United States is closely following an investigation by the Indian government into allegations made by American prosecutors. The charges involve a plot to assassinate pro-Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on U.S. soil, purportedly involving an Indian government official.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mathew Miller, addressed the issue during a daily news briefing. Miller stated that the U.S. government had communicated its serious concerns to the highest levels of the Indian government upon learning of the alleged incident. He confirmed that the Indian government has initiated an investigation into the matter, and the U.S. looks forward to the findings of this investigation.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan, New York, last week charged 52-year-old Nikhil Gupta with collaborating with an Indian government employee, who reportedly had security and intelligence responsibilities, in the assassination plot. The target of the plot, a New York City resident advocating for a sovereign state of Khalistan, was not named at the time. Gupta, arrested by Czech authorities in June, is currently awaiting extradition.

These charges follow earlier statements from a senior Biden administration official indicating that U.S. authorities had foiled a plot to kill a Sikh leader in America and had issued a warning to India over concerns about potential involvement by the New Delhi government.

This case has garnered international attention, highlighting the complexities of diplomatic relations and the importance of adhering to international law and human rights standards.
