Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs Addresses Key Shipping and Port Issues


Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs convened its 15th meeting under the leadership of Mr. Abdul Qadir Patel, MNA, focusing on issues confronting Pakistan’s maritime and shipping sectors. The meeting, held in the Constitution Room at Parliament House, addressed significant matters including land allotment for parking facilities, traffic management around Karachi Port, and the consideration of several legislative amendments aimed at improving port operations.



According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the meeting began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by prayers for civilians and military personnel who have lost their lives in various incidents. Mr. Muhammad Rajpar, Chairman of the Pakistan Ships Agents Association, attended as a special invitee, acknowledging the efforts of the committee in resolving longstanding maritime issues. The committee reviewed reports on previous recommendations, highlighting the need for additional land to meet parking requirements near Karachi Port and recommending prioritized processing of land allotment.



The Inspector General of Traffic Police, Sindh, reported compliance with previous directives and discussed plans for deploying additional traffic personnel to ease congestion around key maritime areas. The committee also resolved to invite the National Highway Authority to the next meeting for updates on traffic alleviation projects.



Further, a Sub-Committee was established to review amendments to the Karachi Port Trust Bill and proposals for land allotment. The committee also deliberated on amendments to the Gwadar Port Authority and Port Qasim Authority Bills, recommending their passage with minor changes. Additionally, two shipping bills were reviewed and recommended for approval.



Concluding the meeting, the Minister for Maritime Affairs highlighted improvements in international port rankings due to the ministry’s efforts, attributing success to the committee’s oversight and guidance. The meeting was attended by several MNAs, ministry officials, and port authority representatives, all contributing to discussions on enhancing the maritime sector’s efficiency and competitiveness.
