ISLAMABAD: The Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control convened for its 26th meeting to address allegations against former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and consider several legislative matters. The Committee, chaired by Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz, deliberated on the controversy surrounding a social media video involving Anmol alias “Pinky,” which allegedly aimed to tarnish Ashraf’s reputation. The meeting also covered issues related to online drug distribution networks, the regulation of social media, and pending legislative bills.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the former Prime Minister raised concerns about the video’s implications, asserting that his name was used maliciously and without evidence, causing distress to him and his family. The Committee was informed by the Additional Inspector General of Police, Sindh, that the video and subsequent allegations were part of a larger investigation into online drug distribution networks in Karachi, which had been operational since 2018. Despite initial claims, no evidence was found linking Ashraf to the case. The Committee members, including Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, supported the need for stringent legislation to prevent the misuse of social media and protect public figures from unfounded accusations.

The Committee also reviewed several legislative bills, including amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure and local government ordinances. While some bills were deferred for future discussion, the Committee recommended the passage of “The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026.” Additionally, the Islamabad Police provided a briefing on the law and order situation, with the Committee urging a shift towards intelligence-based policing to minimize public inconvenience due to security measures.

The meeting highlighted ongoing issues with compensation delays for land acquired by the Capital Development Authority and addressed incidents of misconduct by FIA officials in Karachi. The Committee called for detailed reports on these matters and emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in government operations. Key stakeholders, including senior officers from various ministries and law enforcement agencies, participated in the discussions, underscoring the collaborative approach required to address these complex challenges.
