Islamabad: Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, emphasized the critical need for early diagnosis and effective treatment of hepatitis, warning that neglecting the disease could pose a severe threat to human life. In a message coinciding with World Hepatitis Day, observed globally on July 28, Sadiq underscored the government’s commitment to prioritizing public health initiatives aimed at combating the spread of hepatitis.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Sadiq highlighted the importance of public awareness, early diagnosis, and timely treatment in controlling hepatitis. He advocated for preventive measures, the promotion of safe medical practices, and the expansion of screening programs to ensure timely access to necessary treatments. The Speaker commended Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for launching the “Prime Minister’s National Programme for the Elimination of Hepatitis C,” which aims to eradicate the disease in Pakistan by 2030.
Sadiq acknowledged the government’s initiatives, such as Hepatitis B vaccinations for newborns and nationwide awareness campaigns conducted through educational institutions and the media. He also praised the role of Basic Health Units and Rural Health Centres in promoting public awareness and encouraging immunization efforts.
The Speaker reaffirmed Parliament’s dedication to strengthening the public health system, preventing diseases, and enacting legislation to guarantee quality healthcare services. He called for a collaborative effort between federal and provincial governments, healthcare professionals, civil society, and media to enhance awareness and adopt a coordinated strategy for hepatitis elimination.
Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah echoed these sentiments, stating that public awareness, early diagnosis, and equitable access to treatment are essential for preventing hepatitis. He urged individuals to adopt preventive measures and undergo regular medical check-ups. Shah expressed confidence that, through collective efforts, Pakistan can achieve its goal of becoming free from hepatitis.
