KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah underscored the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening primary health care as a fundamental step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage in Pakistan. Speaking at the National Symposium on Primary Health Care, hosted by Aga Khan University in Karachi, Shah highlighted the importance of primary care in health policy.

In his keynote address, Mr. Shah praised Aga Khan University for organizing a timely discussion that aligns with global health priorities and Sindh’s vision for improved public health. He stated that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for a resilient health system centered around primary care.

The Chief Minister outlined the Sindh Government’s key reforms, including improvements in tertiary care and an expansion of primary health care services. He emphasized efforts to tackle non-communicable diseases and enhance community-based health delivery through initiatives like the Lady Health Worker program.

Shah also noted the vital role of public-private partnerships in delivering health services, especially in urban areas. He cited successful models such as the Peoples Primary Health Initiative and the outsourcing of district hospitals to NGOs as examples that could be scaled up.

Since the 18th Amendment, Sindh has significantly increased its health budget, focusing on preventive and primary care. However, Shah acknowledged ongoing health challenges in certain regions and stressed the importance of collaborative platforms like the Primary Health Care Learning Agenda led by Aga Khan University.

He called for a comprehensive approach involving all sectors, from transportation to climate resilience, to achieve real health progress. The Chief Minister assured that the Sindh Government would consider the symposium’s recommendations in its ongoing efforts for a healthier province and country.
