KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and World Bank Country Director Ms. Bolormaa Amgaabazar convened to assess the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), emphasizing the timely completion of key projects aimed at improving water supply and sanitation infrastructure in Karachi.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, the meeting, which included government officials and World Bank representatives, highlighted the urgency of providing safe drinking water to two million Karachi residents. The Chief Minister directed the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) to accelerate project milestones and maintain strict water quality standards. The World Bank reaffirmed its support for Karachi’s water sector transformation, citing the importance of institutional reforms and timely execution of projects.
Discussions included compensation for Project Affected Persons, environmental compliance, and progress on infrastructure projects like the 2.7-kilometer common corridor. The Chief Minister underscored the need for transparency and efficiency in resolving compensation cases and completing technical works. The review also covered the advanced stages of the K-IV Augmentation project’s procurement activities, with emphasis on swift procedural completion and transparency.
The meeting further explored digital transformation initiatives, including a comprehensive metering plan and future water sector master planning. Transition strategies for unfinished components of KWSSIP-I to KWSSIP-II were discussed, ensuring continuity and alignment with Karachi’s water sector strategy. Recruitment and institutional strengthening measures were also reviewed, with key positions filled to enhance project management capacity.
Ms. Amgaabazar appreciated the Sindh government’s commitment to water sector reforms and affirmed the World Bank’s continued support. She stressed the importance of reforms, governance, and timely execution in achieving project objectives. Concluding the meeting, Chief Minister Shah urged stakeholders to adhere to timelines and ensure project benefits reach citizens promptly, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s water infrastructure.
