Seven months of Indian farmers’ agitation

New Delhi, June 25, 2021 (PPI-OT):Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an association of over 40 farmer unions in India, has announced sit-in protests to mark the completion of seven months of farmers’ agitation in the country. A report released by Kashmir Media Service said, the protesting farmer unions have announced to stage protests in front of governor houses in India tomorrow (Saturday) against three farm laws.

Save agriculture, save democracy’ sit-in protests at governor houses tomorrow (June 26) are aimed at pressing Modi to withdraw the farm laws. The farmers will send memorandums to the Indian President through governors during their sit-in protests.

According to the report, the experts have termed new agriculture laws by Modi-led fascist Indian government as a death warrant for farmers, adding that the three contentious farmer laws introduced in September last year had sparked one of India’s biggest protests. They said, tens of thousands of farmers, demanding repeal of farm laws, have been camping out on highways on the outskirts of Delhi since November 2020 and over 550 Indian farmers have died since the start of the agitation against the farm laws last year, the report added.

The experts said, Modi’s refusal to withdraw the anti-farmer laws is indicative of his insensitivity towards the farmers’ plight as he wants to throw farmers at the mercy of corporate interests through new anti-farmer laws. Modi wants the poor farmers to die of hunger so that he can fill the stomachs of his rich friends, the report said, quoting the experts.

It said, new agricultural laws are meant to undermine the autonomy of Indian farmers but the farmers are determined to continue their protest until the three anti-farmer laws are scrapped unconditionally.
