Islamabad: Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, the Federal Minister for Human Rights, emphasized the pressing issue of child labour and the imperative of safeguarding children’s rights in Pakistan during his address on World Day Against Child Labour. He underscored the importance of education and protection for children as key to ensuring their future and highlighted ongoing governmental efforts to address these concerns.

According to Press Information Department, Tarar pointed out that despite continuous efforts, numerous children remain at risk of exploitation, preventing them from achieving their potential. He cited constitutional safeguards, such as Article 11, which prohibits child employment in hazardous jobs, and Article 25-A, ensuring free and compulsory education, as critical measures in Pakistan’s legal framework.

The senator also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international standards by referencing the country’s ratification of International Labour Organization Conventions No. 138 and No. 182, which focus on child labour issues. He highlighted the government’s initiatives to enhance child protection, expand educational access, and support vulnerable families through social protection programs.

Tarar called for collaborative efforts from government bodies, communities, employers, civil society, parents, and educators to eradicate child labour. He concluded by urging a renewed commitment to creating a nation where children are safe, educated, and empowered to contribute positively to society, noting that protecting children is both a legal and moral duty.
