Senate Committee Demands Action on Cybercrime Delays and Blasphemy Case Procedures

Islamabad: The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights has called for urgent improvements in the handling of cybercrime complaints and the procedures associated with blasphemy cases. During a meeting under the leadership of Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, the Committee reviewed the performance of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and expressed concerns regarding delays in complaint processing and technical issues affecting the online complaint portal.

According to Senate of Pakistan, the Committee was informed that the NCCIA’s online complaint system has been plagued by technical and operational issues, impacting the timely resolution of cybercrime complaints. Despite assurances from NCCIA officials about ongoing remedial work and the availability of written complaint submission through legal representatives, the Committee expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. Senator Qurat ul Ain Marri highlighted an unresolved online campaign against her family, emphasizing the need for timely and effective action.

The Committee has directed the Director General of the NCCIA to provide a detailed briefing on July 17, 2026, addressing the status of the online portal, complaint processing delays, and other institutional issues. Additionally, the Committee reviewed the murder case of Ahmed Javed, where concerns were raised about the lack of progress and communication with the victim’s family.

In discussions on blasphemy-related cases, the Home Secretary Punjab briefed the Committee on the Government of Punjab’s efforts, including the establishment of a special committee and an inter-agency coordination mechanism to improve legal proceedings. The Committee was informed about the monitoring of online blasphemy content and the referral of complaints to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Senator Aimal Wali Khan stressed the importance of protecting minority rights, especially in the context of the Faisalabad incident. Chairperson Zehri called for a detailed briefing on the revised mechanism for registering FIRs in blasphemy cases to ensure due process and prevent misuse of the law.

The Committee also plans to address the rising HIV cases in Sindh, particularly among children, in future discussions. The meeting was attended by various senators and senior ministry representatives, reaffirming the Committee’s commitment to accountability, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
