SC extends protection of ‘Shivling’ area at Gyanvapi mosque complex

New Delhi, November 12, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Supreme Court of India has extended the protection of the area where a ‘shivling’ was stated to be found at the Gyanvapi mosque complex premises in Varanasi city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Surya Kant allowed the Hindu petitioners to move an application before the Varanasi district judge for consolidation of all the lawsuit filed on the matter.

It also directed the Hindu petitioners to file their replies within three weeks on the appeal filed by the management committee of the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid challenging the Allahabad High Court order on the appointment of a survey commissioner. It is to mention here that scores of Hindu groups are campaigning to convert the mosque into a temple. They have called a structure in the mosque a “shivling” to strengthen the claim that the mosque was built after demolishing of a temple. However, the caretakers of the mosque maintained that the said object was not a ‘shivling’ but a part of a stone fountain in the wazu khana (ablution area).
