ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has consistently played a constructive role in international diplomacy, with potential to further contribute to a more representative, transparent, and effective United Nations, according to Sardar Masood Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations, and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Diplo TV of Diplomatic Insight Group, Ambassador Khan discussed his extensive diplomatic career, which spanned four decades and included assignments in China, Geneva, and New York. He shared insights from his early life in Rawalakot, his formative experiences in journalism and broadcasting, and his decision to join Pakistan’s Foreign Service.
Ambassador Khan began his diplomatic career in China, where he studied at the Beijing Language Institute and later served as a third secretary at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing. He emphasized Pakistan’s diplomatic shift during his second tenure in China, which included promoting health, education, and business-to-business relations, laying the groundwork for what would become the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Reflecting on his multilateral career, Khan highlighted his involvement in international negotiations on internet governance and the Biological Weapons Convention, as well as Pakistan’s active role in the UN Human Rights Council. He recalled Pakistan’s efforts at the UN Security Council to promote transparency and accountability, advocating for a more representative Security Council and supporting the United for Consensus approach.
Ambassador Khan also noted his transition from diplomacy to public leadership, underscoring the importance of coalition-building and negotiation in multilateral diplomacy.
