LAHORE: Under the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab government has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing tourism, conserving archaeological and cultural heritage, and upgrading facilities at tourist sites across the province.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, on World Tourism Day, the provincial government reaffirmed its dedication to promoting Punjab’s rich historical, cultural, religious, and natural attractions. Senior Minister Punjab Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized the Chief Minister’s vision to leverage tourism as a key engine for economic growth, employment, investment, and peace. She highlighted efforts to develop tourist spots with modern amenities and align them with international standards.
The “Magnificent Punjab” vision has marked a new phase in tourism and archaeology, focusing on preserving and promoting the province’s heritage. Efforts include the first-ever Punjab Archaeology and Tourism Expo and the mapping of 170 heritage sites. Conservation work is in progress at notable sites such as Taxila, Rohtas Fort, and Harappa.
The initiative includes restoring the Rawalpindi Walled City, Lahore Railway Station, and other historic sites. Plans for an Integrated Archaeological Park and other attractions at Harappa aim to enrich the visitor experience.
Significant restoration work is underway for seven historic forts in Cholistan. The Punjab Tourism Policy draft is complete, and the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority has been activated. A public-private partnership model is fostering private investment in tourism.
Completed projects include development at Chhawah Hills, Taunsa Barrage, and floating jetties at Kallar Kahar. Legislation changes aim to streamline tourism sector operations.
Three new museums are set for Multan, Harappa, and Sialkot, with ongoing restoration at key heritage sites. Punjab has added three sites to the UNESCO Tentative List, underlining its archaeological significance.
Environmentally friendly tourism is a priority, with biodiversity parks under development. The Lahore Lahar project and Murree Development Plan focus on urban and ecological tourism enhancements.
For tourist safety, a 176-member Punjab Tourism Force has been deployed, alongside a Heritage Force for heritage protection. Digital initiatives include GIS mapping of tourist sites and an operational Magnificent Punjab Tourism App.
Adventure tourism is being promoted with projects like Dhrabi Lake Water Sports. The Magnificent Punjab Internship Programme and Youth Tourist Guides Programme are developing human resources in tourism.
Minister Aurangzeb stressed that the vision includes creating a sustainable, tourist-friendly Punjab, promoting local employment, and empowering women, while preserving the province’s historical and cultural identity for future generations.
