Punjab Police Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equality and Women’s Rights

Lahore: Inspector General Police Punjab Abdul Kareem has emphasized the commitment of the Punjab Police to gender equality and the rights of women, describing the protection of women’s rights and the immediate provision of justice as top priorities. According to Punjab Police, the announcement, made on International Women’s Day, highlighted ongoing efforts and initiatives aimed at addressing crimes against women, including sexual harassment, rape, and violence.

Under the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes such as sexual harassment, rape, and violence against women. IG Punjab Abdul Kareem stated that the police force is committed to the immediate registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) in such cases and ensuring the swift arrest of accused individuals. The statement also recognized the significant contribution of women police officers in maintaining law and order, crime control, and community policing.

Initiatives to support women within the police force include the establishment of Safe Cities Women Hostels, equipped with day care centers, libraries, and recreational areas. Additionally, driving training centers for women, Virtual Women Police Stations, and Anti Women Harassment and Violence Cells have been set up. Facilities such as the Women Safety App, panic button, and Helpline 15 aim to assist women facing social injustices. Specialized Sexual Crime Investigation Outreach Units (SSIOUs), led by trained women officers, have also been expanded under the Anti Rape Act.

The Punjab Police reiterated its dedication to providing a safe, dignified, and supportive environment for women in the force and affirmed that these efforts would continue as a priority.
