Shillong, The northeastern state of Meghalaya has become the center of protests following an incident where a veterinarian was allegedly harassed by personnel from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). The incident, which has ignited widespread condemnation, highlights ongoing concerns over the conduct of security forces in border regions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident involving Dr. Seiboklang Buam of the Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association occurred on February 11 in Muktapur, located in the West Jaintia Hills District. Reports suggest that Dr. Buam was subjected to harassment by a BSF officer named Rejender Kumar and his colleague, prompting the Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association to decry the event as an act of “high-handedness.” The association has called for a written apology from the BSF authorities to address the grievance.
The incident has not only drawn criticism from professional associations but has also caught the attention of political figures in the region. Jemino Mawthoh, the general secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP), expressed his condemnation of the BSF personnel’s actions, emphasizing the need for accountability. Mawthoh announced plans to contact the Director General of the BSF and the BSF Vigilance Department, seeking an investigation into the matter and appropriate disciplinary actions against those involved.
This event has amplified concerns regarding the behavior of BSF personnel, especially in the context of their interactions with local populations in border areas. The BSF’s role in managing border security is crucial, but incidents like this risk undermining the trust and cooperation between border communities and security forces.
The demand for a formal apology and calls for an investigation reflect a broader desire for respect and dignity in the operations of border security forces. Stakeholders, including the MVSA and political leaders, are adamant about the necessity of preventing such incidents in the future, underscoring the importance of restraint and ethical conduct by security personnel in their dealings with the public.
