Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif welcomed United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on an official visit to Pakistan, discussing regional peace, multilateralism, and international security. The Prime Minister emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to a representative UN and highlighted the nation’s diplomatic efforts and peacekeeping contributions.
According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Sharif lauded Secretary-General Guterres for his commitment to the UN Charter and international law. He highlighted the importance of UN reform that aligns with the priorities of developing countries, focusing on conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s role in mediating international disputes and promoting dialogue, particularly in the context of the US-Iran relationship.
Sharif also addressed regional issues, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions. He criticized India’s unilateral actions regarding the Indus Waters Treaty and stressed the importance of a stable Afghanistan for Pakistan’s security. The Prime Minister expressed concerns over terrorism originating from Afghanistan and called for verifiable actions against terrorist groups.
In terms of global issues, Sharif reaffirmed support for the Palestinian right to self-determination and the Gaza Peace Plan. He advocated for increased access to affordable financing for developing countries to enhance development and climate resilience. Secretary-General Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s contributions to UN peacekeeping and its diplomatic role in promoting dialogue and de-escalation. The visit concluded with a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Sharif in honor of the Secretary-General and his delegation.
