New York: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, underscored the importance of maintaining the safety and sanctity of the Harmain al-Sharifain and condemned the recent drone attack on Makkah. He emphasized Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and highlighted the need for global economic arteries like the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab to remain open.

According to Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Sharif also spoke about the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement among Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan, emphasizing its role in promoting regional stability and peace. He highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, including facilitating discussions between Washington and Tehran, and praised key figures in Pakistan’s military and government for their role in these peace efforts.

Turning to South Asia, the Prime Minister addressed recent tensions with India, citing external aggression and Pakistan’s response under international law. He called for a resolution to the Kashmir dispute and criticized India’s actions regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. In discussing terrorism, Sharif urged Afghanistan to prevent its territory from being used against Pakistan and emphasized the protection of Afghan citizens’ rights.

Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s contributions to UN peacekeeping, the challenges of Islamophobia, and the country’s economic initiatives, including partnerships with China through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. He stressed the urgency of climate change action and called for global financial support for developing countries.

On the issue of Palestine, the Prime Minister voiced concerns over Israeli actions and affirmed Pakistan’s support for an independent Palestinian state. He concluded by advocating for Security Council reform, emphasizing a need for inclusivity and accountability to restore trust and preserve peace globally.
