ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for conflict resolution during discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in Islamabad. The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace and stability, emphasizing a peaceful resolution of regional disputes, including the Jammu and Kashmir issue, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
According to Radio Pakistan, the meeting took place during the UN Secretary-General’s official visit to Pakistan. Prime Minister Sharif commended Guterres for his dedication to the UN Charter and his contributions to international peace and security. The discussions highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, particularly its role in mediating between the United States and Iran, and its commitment to maintaining international peace through UN peacekeeping missions.
Prime Minister Sharif also addressed the Indus Waters Treaty, expressing concerns over India’s unilateral actions, and emphasized the need for peace and stability in Afghanistan, calling for concrete actions against terrorism originating from Afghan territory. Additionally, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Palestinian self-determination and the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan.
The UN Secretary-General acknowledged Pakistan’s significant contributions to global peace and its proactive role in the UN Security Council. Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, and its efforts in promoting de-escalation in international conflicts. The meeting concluded with Prime Minister Sharif hosting a dinner in honor of the visiting delegation.
