President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Mr. Duarte Pacheco called on Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani here at Parliament House

Islamabad, February 07, 2023 (PPI-OT):President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Mr. Duarte Pacheco called on Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani here at Parliament House on Tuesday. In the meeting, discussions were held on increasing institutional cooperation and making the inter-parliamentary union more dynamic.

The IPU President is on a visit to Pakistan to attend the two-day conference organized by International Parliamentarians Congress on Road Safety starting from February 8. He termed this initiative of IPC as very important and said that road Safety is very important in modern times.

Chairman Senate said that Government of Pakistan is focused on enhancing regional connectivity and trade through land routes. Road safety is a global issue and everyone has to work together for it. He said that realizing the importance of this issue, the IPC decided to utilize the experiences of international political leadership and experts to formulate strategies and recommendations through a joint action plan.

Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani underlined that Pakistan is determined to promote peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality and sustainable development as per the mission of IPU. He said that among the challenges that are being faced at the global level, road safety is also becoming very important.

Road safety is very important in the overall development process and the problem is of a global nature. The Chairman Senate briefed the guest about the constitutional and legal role of the Upper House, the election process and importance of the Senate. Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman, Secretary Senate Mohammad Qasim Samad Khan and senior officials were also present in the meeting.

Chairman Senate opined that IPU is an ideal platform. Inter-parliamentary cooperation can play an important role for national and regional development. He reiterated that Pakistan has full confidence that increased inter-parliamentary cooperation through IPU can lead to development opportunities and peaceful resolution of disputes can also be made possible.

He drew attention of IPU President towards human rights violations in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine. Chairman Senate expressed hope that IPU President’s visit would be helpful in promoting the institutional cooperation between the two countries. President IPU described his visit to Pakistan as very important and said that Pakistan’s active role in IPU is recognized worldwide.
